A few useful distinctions

Mandarin first, Cantonese as an extra

The Pinyin, CSL clues and hosted audio teach Mandarin. The Cantonese Google Translate link opens the written entry with Cantonese selected as the source language. The optional CantoWords link searches a Cantonese dictionary using the written entry. Dictionary entries can show Jyutping pronunciation, English meanings and Cantonese examples. Everyday Cantonese may use a different word. Choose the relevant meaning; if a phrase has no match, try individual words or search its English meaning. These searches are not a reviewed Cantonese translation of this list.

Synthetic audio and context

Mandarin recordings use Microsoft Huihui; English meanings use Microsoft Zira, following the Travel Toolkit's local speech-production approach. These are synthetic practice recordings, not human recordings. Pronunciation and dictionary verification remain pending. Where the existing manuscript uses a sentence to clarify a polyphonic word, the player shows that exact spoken sentence. Fill-in models use clearly labeled practice examples.

TonePerfect and Google Translate

External tools open in a new tab. Google Translate is a listening/lookup aid. MDBG provides Mandarin dictionary searches with Pinyin and English definitions; for longer models, try individual words if needed. TonePerfect provides its own pronunciation practice and may request microphone access or sign-in. Scores are not sent back to this website. If a link does not prefill correctly, use Copy Chinese and paste into the tool.
